Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy New Year! May the year 2019 be a year of good health, happiness and prosperity for all.

And as we start the New Year, many of us are committed to resolutions that include losing weight and enjoying a healthier lifestyle. So, we wanted to brag about our onions and how they should be a part of your healthy living!

Onions have many health benefits, mostly due to their high content of antioxidants and sulfur-containing compounds. They have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and have been linked to reduced risk of cancer, lower blood sugar levels and improved bone health.

Onions are one of the most versatile staples in our diet and are commonly used as a flavoring or side dish and in Indian cooking. Onions can be baked, boiled, grilled, fried, roasted, sauteed, powdered or eaten raw in salads. Basically, you add onions to any meal and kick it up a notch!

Raw onions are very low in calories, with only 40 calories per 100 grams (3.5 oz). They are high in Vitamin C, are low sodium, fat and cholesterol free. Onions are also a good source of fiber, which accounts for 0.9-2.6% of the fresh weight, depending on the type of onion. They are very rich in healthy soluble fibers called fructans.

Fructans are so-called prebiotic fibers. In other words, the beneficial bacteria in the gut can use them for fuel. This may reduce inflammation, and cut the risk of coloncancer.

So, slice, dice, grill, bake or boil some healthy onions today!
